I am using a laptop with exactly the same chipset. I run Mandrake 8.1
(9.0 should be not very different in this regard) with custom built CVS
XFree86. The i830/i845 chipset driver is undergoing constant changes, so
I think Your best bet would be to do the same. Actually, the i830/845
driver had had a major rewrite/bug-fix update yesterday, and I can say
this is the most decent version of this driver ever (and I am using it
for a year now).
Your chances of having this driver in Cooker are slim, since it really
is only in the latest CVS, and as far as I know even Mandrake does not
release rpms from CVS stuff. You would have to wait till the X guys
release XFree 4.3.0.
You can also find my page about setting up linux on a i830 laptop
