hmmm,

I would love to use the higer security models in 8.2 and nine, but what
stopped me is that stuff that works in earlier hosts.allow/hosts.deny
doesn't seem to work the same in them as it does in earlier versions.. (7.2)

for example, in 7.2:

hosts.deny

sshd: ALL

in hosts.allow

sshd: 123.123.123.123

and that allowed that host (123.123.123.123) to connect, but no-one else...

however, in 8.1 and 8.2 boxes, (and nine I am assuming, but haven't tried)

This doesn't work, it blocks all access to sshd and doesn't allow the hosts
specified to connect..
so up to now my method is to log into webmin (which is ip locked) on those
box's, and use it to hash out the hosts.deny rule, and log in via ssh.. when
I am finished updating, I put the hosts.deny line back in..

anyone know what the format of this is with the newer versions? I looked at
the man pages, but nothing stuck out as being different.. (besides, Weitse
has been known to be slow with doc upgrades ala postfix.)

Its not a big issue, but its own that I would use alot for all my services
given the ability..

anyone have any ideas on that one???

regards

Frank

I have been having troubles with even standard security. What I did was
make the edit to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf suggested at the link I give in
this MUO Board post:

http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.php?t=5416&highlight=

I also commented the following lines and added the third:

###AuthType Basic
###AuthClass System
AuthType None

under <Location /admin> Printing and cups administration *seems* to be
working for me now but I don't know what the security ramifications are.
That link at the Board contains much more info.
