Much the same happened with me when I tried to use notlame (an mp3 encoder), 
so what I did was make a symbolic link (as root) to the 5 lib;

ln -s /lib/libncurses.so.5.2 /usr/lib/libncurses.so.4

Worked fine after that, although I do not know if the 5lib is fully backward 
compatible with the 4lib.
