yey! took your advice, looked at man pam_console, i edited /etc/security/console.perms to comment out the line for the sound permissions: #<console> 0600 <sound> 0600 root.audio and made my users part of the audio group, chmod 660 /etc/sound/* and arts works in both kde sessions, fingers crossed my alterations stay altered upon reboot :-)
