Mikko, Thanks for the info. ML9.0 install didn't give me many options -- it seemed to be making most decisions for me. I was surprised, in fact, that it installed boot manager with linux as default without even asking. I couldn't figure out how to change the default OS later, which is why I had to uninstall.
I'll give it another try, and see if there's some way to pick the X version. It's a shame they would be dropping support for perfectly good hardware that isn't that old. :-( I was running Slackware in '93, on a 486 box, and I liked it a lot, but I started to get busy with the Windows side and when I got a new system in '98 I didn't want to go through all that pain again, and have been admiring Linux from afar since then. Mandrake has been getting a lot of good press about ease of use. I was hoping I wouldn't be spending a lot of time fiddling with X config files etc., especially since my video card was (I thought) kind of generic. It took me two weeks to download 9.0 over my dial-up connection. Don't think I want to go through that again to get 8.2. :-) Anyway, I'll give it another shot. Thanks again.
