I know there's a setting in the Mandrake Control Center that allows you to do this via a gui, but all you really need to do is edit /etc/inittab and change the line
 
id:5:initdefault:
 
to
 
id:3:initdefault:
 
The line is right near the top.
 
On 8.2, the setting to do this via the GUI is under Boot->Boot Config->Launch the X Window System at Start
