Hi Todd,

I ran drakeopt on that machine,
I played with hdparm, tried all sorts of stuff..

every time the speed went down, not up...

eventually, I gave up and settled for what it had...

and then I gave up on the whole install, I did want to work out what the
prob was, but couldn't afford that box to be down this long..

So I installed nine onto it last night.. and this email is going through it
and my adsl connection...so its all working now..

Its a shame really, I hate not knowning what the answer was..

hopefully mdk9.0 will prove more resilient... :-)

Seems like one of these two could be higher.

Should be able to gain some speed here.

Good.

The first line is redundant, but uncomment those four lines and restart
the system (or manually feed them to hdparm on the commandline. Then
see how it works.

But we've strayed from the original problem. You have high system load.
Have you been keeping up with the updates? Do you have a very difficult
or root password or is it something easily guessible by someone who
knows you. Have you downloaded, compiled, and run chkrootkit?
