Without more information, I can't guarantee this will work for you, but I got the same error and was able to resolve it by adding the following line to my .fetchmailrc file:
mda '/usr/bin/procmail -d %T' This will force fetchmail to send the downloaded messages to a procmail process and procmail to store them in '/var/spool/mail/USERID'. This worked for me; YMMV.
