This may not be the place for this, but I thought I'd float the idea
here first. I'd like to suggest a couple of new options for the urpmi
tools: an "--upgrade-status" option and a "--noauto" option.

The "--upgrade-status" option would essentially do a "urpmi.update -a"
and a "urpmi --update --auto-select", automatically replying "no" to
any suggested upgrades. The already existing "-q" option would
silence the output of the urpmi.update section only.

The "--noauto" option is simply the opposite of the existing "--auto"
option which I feel should be included for completeness.

Using these new paramters, a single command could run as a cron job to
update sources and report the availability of upgrades without
installing them:

urpmi --upgrade-status -q

Which, if your /etc/crontab has MAILTO=root in it would generate a
single message to root hopefully reading:
"everything already installed"

Without the "-q" option, the message would also show the preceeding
attempts to contact each update each source.

If developers wanted to get fancy with it, then "--upgrade-status"
could format the available upgrades differently, maybe with an
explanatory message and each available package on a new line rather
than just one right after the other.

Sincerely,
Jim Hubbard
