In normal operation, each week the logs are rotated to old names, i.e. /var/log/messages becomes /var/log/messages.1 and .../messages.1 becomes messages.2 and 2 becomes 3, etc. The old log files are gzipped to save space. This is done as part of logrotate. You do have the logrotate rpm installed, don't you?

Hi,

it seems like /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog are about 35 MB
each...
Are they ever deleted, or should I do that manually every now and then?

Thanks

Hans
