Here's what works for me -- Every night I copy important stuff into a local backup directory on a different partition or spindle. Really important stuff I rsync over ssh to another site. That first rsync is a killer, but it's hardly noticeable after that. Tape is the right way to go if you need to look for something very large and several months old, but if you just packrat everything into ~ like me, then all you need to do is backup /etc, /home, /usr/local, and /var. -- Jack Coates Monkeynoodle: A Scientific Venture...
