Thanks for replying...I tried this but to no avail. Any other suggestions would be most welcome, but I really think the kernel as configured is not going to work out. The unfortunate thing is that I cannot compile another kernel and have it work because the numbering is important ("2.4.19mdk") when it comes to installation (apparently the choice of modules to load is dependent on the kernel string). Could Mandrake prepare a kernel that fixes the problem, and then post it to their web site? I believe others are experiencing the same problem, which is essentially that the kernels as shipped for Mandrake 9.0 have problems recognizing ICH3M based chipsets for IDE controllers.
