This is what happens when there is a bug *IN* the kernel. Your first response might be "it's a module, it's not built in to the kernel" but the fact is that a module is loaded into kernel space, so it does in fact exist "within" the kernel (at the time the execution of the bug occurred). A program failing due to a bug in the driver cannot possibly be expected to unload that driver safely. A kernel that has a buggy driver loaded cannot possibly be expected to free that driver and do all the garbage cleanup necessary to do so. Blue skies...
