James, I figured it out. Thanks for the good tips. You got me looking in the right direction. I had forgotten that the other I had started doing updates with the update manager and had to kill the process. some of those packages were kde packages and kde got hosed. Along with most of the file ownership of my home dir. Once I got KDE fixed the rest was a snap.
