For example, checking 'ping' for Mandrake 9.0 presents the following
helpful information:

File:/bin/ping
MD5:8fccc923fed7e223266f8f72573bae88
SHA-1:589b41f644b9cc6095752a11dcdaee4d40919c3d
Size:31628 (bytes)

At the command line do:

md5sum /bin/ping

If yours are different (and you haven't been upgrading with Cooker or
such), you know something's wrong.
