Partially I think you've run into a problem I did on another box I
had... 7.1 is no longer actively supported by Mandrake, and some of it's
tools are out of date for sure.  With my newer boxes I've actually got
urpmi running on a cron job that daily checks for "updates" and grabs
them.  My 7.2 box that I just had decommissioned (hardware) had 321 days
uptime it's last run.  (Last reboot was due to a physical move. Should
have moved it connected to it's UPS *grin*)  Normally with 8.x forward
urpmi and other such tools are working now to a level that does allow
for a better remote experience.
