Message on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list suggests that kernel panics at shutdown on ACPI-based systems might be related to unloading modules:

Yes /etc/init.d/acpid unloads the modules when acpid stops. Unfortunately the kernel still wants them. If you comment out the unloading of the modules in the script, shutdown goes smoothly, Cheers Colin" My system certainly kernel panics about half the time when I try to shut down or even log out of X, but Mandrake's /etc/init.d/acpi isn't unloading the modules, and neither is /etc/init.d/halt.
