first, check your /etc/passwd. open it in an editor and look
in the 3rd field for the nr. 500, eg:
user:x:500:blab...
        ^------------- this is it.

but yours might look like:
:x:500:blabla

so put at the beginning of the line the username u wish. if
the username is already there, try the same with the /etc/shadow
file, but there you have to look for a line starting
with a ':' , eg:
:SVq44SdaInkm2:12056:0:999999:7:::

all other lines in this file start with
username:SVdk......

not with a ':'. if you have the line, put in the same name as in
your passwd file for the UID 500 user.

after that, run as root:
pwconv

on command line.

if this should for any hell's reason not work, try:
useradd -d /home/username -g groupname -s /bin/bash
-u 500 -o username

but this should be in one line.

have phun ;)
