OK I give up. CDs seem to be like a foreign country to me.

It doesn't matter if I use Gnome-Toaster or X-CD-Roast. Any cd I burn is visible in my linux box but once it is inserted into one of the Windoze machines (W2K, W98, NT4) I just get a message 'please insert cd'.

Bugger damn and hell it must be something simple but what?

Weird.

What format are you telling it to burn under XCDRoast? Make sure Joliett is enabled. (Actually a combination Joliett and rockridge works the best for a wide range of systems in my experience.)
But even without joliet the cd should be readable under windows, albeit with short (8.3) file names.
