It doesn't matter if I use Gnome-Toaster or X-CD-Roast. Any cd I burn is visible in my linux box but once it is inserted into one of the Windoze machines (W2K, W98, NT4) I just get a message 'please insert cd'.

What format are you telling it to burn under XCDRoast? Make sure Joliett is enabled. (Actually a combination Joliett and rockridge works the best for a wide range of systems in my experience.)
