Cheers Todd, excellent, I figured it was a kinda generic run everything in here script, but being completely knackered I couldnt figure out where (Duuh!), and it would turn out to be embarrasingly obvious - note to self, stop trying to figure it out when you're too tired to make coffee!
So the next question is, do I need it? May sound dumb but its breaking KDE2 for users, but not root. In fact it doesnt seem to get run by root at all. If I change $PATH back in root then spawn a new shell, it doesnt get stuck at the beginning of $PATH. Yet root runs KDE3 fine, because as far as I can tell /opt/kde3/bin/startkde3 sets PATH="/opt/kde3/bin:$PATH" before running /opt/kde3/bin/startkde which is what does the real business. So if I lose kde3.sh wont the users be able to run both KDE3 and KDE2 without KDE2 using all the wrong calls?? Also is it not possible to get KDE2 to access KDE3 libraries if it needs them for stuff like k3b which looks fantastic :o), if not I've got KDE3 to run it in I know!
