[...] It should be fairly obvious what the problem is here. =) Try a different mirror to download updates from. This one is likely offline for some reason if the connection is timing out. Or try to connect to it manually (use lftp or ncftp or any other favourite ftp client, just to see if you can connect or if you also get timeouts).
