[expert] mplayer and mencoder on 9.0

Has anyone had success with mplayer and mencoder on 9.0? I got a basic mplayer and mencoder compiled, but the functionality is extremely limited ... especially for mencoder. For example, I can not seem to do anything to make the configure script find libmp3lame, which is crucial for doing anything with mp3's in mencoder.

I'd appreciate help from anyone with success.
