im also trying to find a reason for ping's hanging.i
got the same problem on my CRON-ed monitoring scripts
which spawned new instances of the script cause  ping
hanged. its not running MDK though. but it exhibits
the same problem as yours. the kernel on that machine
is 2.4.18

the quick fix i did was put a time out of on the
pinging. once it doesnt respond for about 2000 secs,
ping aborts.

check out the -w option of the command ping.
