On another system that I had, I did try and use makedev, but it did not work. It made the devices, but links were not made to correct locations.... I ended up rebuilding the system with the drive in and all went well. The system now sees the tape drive, there really ought to be a better way to add hardware to a Linux box without having to rebuild the system.
