Per the suggestions here, and on the errata, I unplugged the printer, and tried it again.
And as expected, it made it past that.
So, with the load finished, I logged in as a regular user. Yup. Worked fine.
So, then do the cursory reboot, just to be sure all is well, and ..
Klank.. klunk.. ppfffttttt............ nada
I dies on starting up logical volume management... It just hangs there. So, time to put a reliable system back on it.
