If you visit a Gentoo mirror, you'll find versions of Gentoo 1.4_ rc1 for pentium 3, i586, i686, athlon, athlon-mp, and athlon-xp. They come in Gentoo Reference Platform (grp) .iso live cd's (about 525MB), as well as stage 2 (50mb) and stage 3 (84MB) tarballs for each cpu. From what they say, they plan to follow the same plan for the 1.4 final release. With the grp iso's, you get a fully functioning Gentoo version with KDE 3.1 from an install cd for your version cpu/mobo. Then you can add more packages. Sure, you can compile the entire distro from stage 1 if you like, but they do offer the other "shortcuts" pre-compiled for other cpus, which is essential for those without broadband connections.
I'm no expert, but wouldn't Mandrake already have the compiling routine setup, ready to compile their entire distro, and it just be a matter of changing the optimizing flags. Maybe it's more complicated than that, and if so, I'd like to be enlightened as to why. Texstar and CyberCFO have done KDE 3.1 and XFree86, and a few others for athlon-xp, and posted them on his ibiblio directory. I installed them on a stock 9.0 install, and they work fine- noticably snappier performance. Makes me want to do the entire Mandrake distro in that manner. If I got some packages rebuilt, and working myself, I'd post them somewhere for others, but I don't have broadband, so I'm unable to do so easily.
