append "acpi=off" to your /etc/lilo.conf file then run lilo from the command line and reboot. RC2 will have acpi turned off by default due to the number of problems it's having. But in RC1 it was turned on. Once you've done this apmd will be back. (acpi cancels apmd for reasons unknown to me. It seems to be either or.) James
