Hi List!What version of (Mandrake?) are you talking about? I have had such problems, which seemed related, at least in part, to version, BIOS, or both. For instance, at one point (~8.1), on a via kx133 board, I had to edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt, changing
I bought a mobo with via chipset KM266. Under WinXP power down works ok and my computer switch off.
However, under Linux, shutdown process stop in the screen with "Power down..." message. I know I can safely press switch off power button but if it could do it automatically...
My mobo (K7VM2 ASRock) has ACPI support. I tried "append acpi=off" at lilo, not worked.
Maybe does someone have any tip? Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
HALTARGS="-i -d -p" [ -f /poweroff -o ! -f /halt ] && HALTARGS="$HALTARGS -p"
to
HALTARGS="-i -d" [ -f /poweroff -o ! -f /halt ] && HALTARGS="$HALTARGS -p"
IIRC. It has been some time and I don't know why this worked but the answer turned up from a search at Google Groups.
I don't know how related the next is as it is an AliMagik1 Iwill XP333-R but, in 9.0, I would get a kernel panic at power down, which was solved by recompiling a kernel and changing only to the following switch:
CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF=y
The help for that switch says to try for a buggy BIOS that has trouble powering down. After I upgraded my BIOS, with the newer cooker kernels, this switch is not required to be on.
In 9.1, the default kernel switch at boot will be acpi=off (as of rc1, anyway), as many laptops are having trouble with the new acpi implementation. For my desktop, this switch causes the kernel panic at power off but it works if I remove it from my boot menu.
