I know that PCTel and LT winmodem works well with any MDK. But I always
use tarball files and informations from linmodem, like Praedor.
BTW, the problem you face with pccard and winmodem I had with sound in my
mobo. When using modem, my sound switched off (but system didn't lock
up). And that seems to be a common issue with Via. However, I handled
kppp to stop sound deamon (alsa) e restart after logon, all worked
gracefully.
Maybe, if you turn off or modem (modules) or pccard for a while, you can
avoid lock up.
