FWIW I have gotten Knoppix to run very well on two of my father-in-law's Dell 
laptops.  Granted, the distro runs entirely from CD but it may help you in 
determining which one works well with Linux.

http://www.linuxiso.org has Knoppix as an ISO -- they make great (free) gifts 
for all of your diehard M$ friends.
