Using web interfaces for fora is a classic example of "doing something
blindingly stupid because we have this tool that makes it easy." It's
like when a company buys a workflow-enabling ERP system and suddenly
every freaking expense report and PO needs to go through four different
approvals -- why? Because it's easier to do now than when we were faxing
and mailing these around!

Just because they ask to be paid for it doesn't mean it will ever
generate revenue. People have to see value that they can't get
elsewhere. I have studied Mandrake Expert a bit when looking at
implementing something similar, and I don't see a compelling value add
over the mailing list as it currently stands.

Hm, interesting... I just went and looked at it again, and it is now
much closer to the idea that I had :-) Your money buys a response
timeframe, not just an answer.

It's very very bad in the Bay Area. I'm still employed, but many of my
friends and colleagues have been unemployed for six to eight months,
many more are looking at pink slips within the next two to three months.
