So far so good for the most part after installing 9.1 on my IBM Thinkpad 1412.
Very nice installer. In any case, I find that I am unable to change X's
resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768. During initial install I tried but then
decided against the higher resolution, going with 800x600, but after starting
KDE 3.1 (very nice) I just hate the size of the default fonts, etc. Rather
than changing every single one of them manually, I would first like to change
to a higher resolution (1024x768) to see if this will work for me. I can't.
I have started mcc and set the resolution there to 1024x768 and rebooted.
Still 800x600. I separately started XFdrake and see that it SAYS 1024x768
but the resolution is still 800x600. Also, trying to test the settings
fails: xfs gets shutdown and restarted but then an error message appears in
my xterm (from which I started the app) saying that xfs isn't running (it IS
running). In no case am I able to get the resolution to 1024x768.

I know it can do it because it did originally during the install process. How
do I change resolution in 9.1 when it refuses to let me? I am even
considering removing all references to 800x600 in XFConfig-4 to see if that
will force it to 1024x768 but there must be a better way.

As for icons...They are OK but I hate the floppy and cdrom icon titles
displayed. Their names are way too long. Right now, by default, I have a
CDROM icon titled: CDROM mounted on mnt/cdrom and Floppy mounted on
mnt/floppy

I want to change these to CDROM and Floppy. I don't need nor want the
extraneous wording. I am offered no option to rename these icons even in
their respective properties windows. The names don't highlight upon single
clicking either so I cannot edit the names directly. Their context menus
don't offer a "delete" option either. How does one change the names of these
desktop icons? Must I (attempt) to drag them to the trash, dump the trash,
and then manually create proper icons with the short, simple names I want?
