Hey everyone: Yesterday I spent a good 6+ hours trying to upgrade from MDK9.0 to 9.1.
I downloaded the ISO's beforehand, and I checked the md5sum. I actually used the same CDs to install 9.1 on a computer that didn't have an OS, and it worked perfectly. Now, the upgrade seemed to be going fine, but once I rebooted, I'd get lilo, and then it would hang just after "uncompressing" the kernel. No error message, no nothing. No complaints. Just the black screen saying "uncompressing the kernel" (or something like that). I tried several times, because I thought it might have been because my / partition was a RAID5 array, but I even tried changing that partition to a normal XFS partiton (on /dev/hda5), and I still got the same result. The boot disk made during install didn't help either. Then I tried unmounting all raid partitions except /home and /usr/local, but that didn't do it either. In fact, I was surprised that although the /mnt/etc/fstab during the installation said there were only those 2 md partitions, /mnt/proc/mdstat still showed all partitions on. So I tried raidstop on all the partitions that I wasn't going to use during this install (i.e. I left /home and /usr/local running), and it would still hang at boot. Then I tried installing 9.1 but keeping the 9.0 kernel, and that booted past the "decompressing kernel" and went all the way till when the Xserver starts, and then the machine made a hard reboot (reproducible). Then I tried a clean install (with the 2.4.21 kernel), keeping the same partitions and RAID arrays, and just NOT formatting /usr/local/, /home, and /opt, and same thing, it just would not go for it. Eventually after 6 hours, I reinstalled 9.0 and it worked flawlessly. Any one have any suggestions? Did anyone make a 9.1 install/upgrade with RAID arrays (most importantly one on /)? I even used the patch for 9.0 and RAID on /, hoping that might do the trick, but nothing. I've been using 9.1 on another machine, and it's pretty good. I don't know why it just doesn't want to install on this machine.
