Two things that might help you, Joe.  First, have you looked at Kuikshow?  
That can give you thumbnails of a directory, a larger view of the pic 
selected, slideshows, etc..

Next, in Konqueror you can set it to show icon-size thumnails.  I think it's 
set in Konqueror > settings > Configure Konqueror > File Manager > Previews
