If the above doesn't work (it frequently does try it first)... there is
a switch in the kernel called.

Use Real Mode APM BIOS call to power off 

(under General last item or close to  the last.)  This is for really
buggy BIOS's (and boy howdy some of them are buggy) and will enable them
to power off correctly.  MDK can't enable this by default because if the
BIOS does this correctly then this switch will cause them to not be able
to power off.   I've an e-machines box I built up for a friend I had to
do this on.
