Thanks to Norm.
Disabling KDE automatic device display did it for me.
Now I'm a happy bunny ;)

Note: In Gnome right clicking on the desktop gives the mount/umount
option (based on your /etc/fstab) which I thought is more straight
forward. The drawback being that Gnome is nowhere near as stable as KDE
3.1 (or pseudo 3.1.1) is.
