In the end the only recourse was the reset switch. The filesystem btw is XFS, and no problem with recovery this time. However I did not experience troubles of this sort under 8.2, so let me knock the hardware suggestions in the head right off the bat. According to LM82 the HW is immaculate (and has not changed); in addition, all LM91 updates have been applied.
Has anyone else experienced similar situations or is my situation unique?
I had various lockups with 9.0, which I (almost) solved by reverting to the kernel that came with 8.2.
But with 9.1 the system has been rock solid (crossing fingers). Heck, I can even use the nvidia driver that caused endless problems (ranging from random lockups to filesystem (I'm using XFS too) corruption) with previous versions (from time to time, when using xvideo, still crashes X, but there's no lockup).
