This I never doubted, as windoze 98 has no problem doing it with the ET6x00
video adapter driver built into windoze 98. That driver will even run my 19"
monitor up to 1600x1200, even though the ET6x00 supposedly is limited to
1024x768. The Scitech SDD Pro driver for OS/2 also runs the same ET6x00 up
to 1600x1200 on my 19", though it too refuses to run the 17" at 1280x1024.

I'd love to, but I bought it as a floor model at Radio Shack. No manual
could be found when I brought it home, but they assured me they would
get me one. Several attempts to get them to keep their promise failed,
and contacting Radio Shack home office didn't help either. The monitor
says IBM all over it, but IBM won't admit the model (2118-3A3) ever
existed, and said get one from Radio Shack.
It seems there ought to be some way to find out what settings windoze
uses, but I've never had any luck finding out how to do that either.

This is what I was asking how to do in the first place. I know it works
at 60Hz refresh for 1024x768, which is perfectly fine and what I want,
but I don't know how to figure out HorizSync, or what those Sony ModeLine
statements are good for.
If I try to change monitor with mcc to [EMAIL PROTECTED], as soon as I log
out, the screen goes blank. On tty1 I examine /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and
find in part the following:

This monitor absolutely will not run 16 bit X if "VertRefresh 50-70" is
in there. I always change it to 56-60, but that's only good up to
1024x768. If I set 16 bit thusly:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
restarting X gets a blank screen again.
