Anne. What was your previos email tool? Depending on the mail reader, maildir should still keep mail in text form. The only mailer that I know that does not is Microsoft Outlook (blaaaa). Even evolution which looks like Outlook keeps the actual mail in text format in standard mbox format. Evolution has a lot of other index files but the main file for each folder is still mbox format. With evolution, it allows you to import a single file so you just need to import each of the mail folders that you want.
