You can, but it's a global gnome1 setting...

I have this section in ~/.gnome/Gnome

You can configure it as you like... (note that galeonTab is a script in
my case, but of course you can just enter any command there... %s is the
URL)

[URL Handlers]
default-show=galeonTab "%s"
ghelp-show=nautilus --no-desktop "%s"
info-show=nautilus --no-desktop "%s"
man-show=nautilus --no-desktop "%s"
http-show=galeonTab "%s"
https-show=galeonTab "%s"
ftp-show=galeonTab "%s"
