Makes me wonder what you use for reading help files. In all helpers I know there is a search feature, be it a text file or a html or even a man file.

Maybe I misunderstand what you are looking for but I do a lot of searching in help files using the search features of the app I read the help file with.

Responding to me or him? I'll be more specific about what it is that I am talking about. Mandrake 8.2 had this wonderful system where htdig was manipulated by a web app and used to create a search index based on a list of directories specified by the user. As I recall, no webserver was required. It operated just like a web search engine though, with the exception that one could specify the directories that were to be indexed and searched. I added "/usr/share/doc", clicked on a button to rebuild the index and then I could search all the little HTML based HOWTOs, help files, operator manuals etc. etc. It especially proved helpful when help documents turned up in odd places.
