I have been trying to get my desktop setup to share its dialup connection with
my laptop - both connected by ethernet (crossover cable) to no avail. I
tried doing it manually with various commands to iptables. Under MDK 9.0 it
worked but under 9.1 it doesn't. I had created a script in 9.0 to do this:

#!/bin/sh

echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

/sbin/iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/24 -i eth0

# setup masquerading
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQUERADE

# allow anyting from the LAN to the internet
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -j ACCEPT

# statefull check
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

# allow loopback traffic
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -p ALL -i lo -j ACCEPT

Now, if I run this nothing at all happens. Nothing gets added to iptables.
If I do an 'iptables -L' it merely shows the default, vanilla, empty
iptables.

Next I tried setting this up via DrakConf and Drakegw. It SEEMED to set it up
but when I then tried to connect my laptop to my desktop, the desktop
(running, supposedly, dhcpcd) failed to give my laptop an address though I
could see the polling from the laptop via gkrellm on the desktop. No ip
assigned, no connection shared. What IS wrong here? I am using the
192.168.0.0 network at home. If I manually set my laptop to 192.168.0.2 (my
desktop is 192.168.0.1 on ethernet), I connect to my desktop fine but cannot
share its modem connection.

What's the magic trick? What changed in this regard between 9.0 to 9.1 that
broke my simple iptables script listed above?
