i asked earlier here re mobos & CPUs for use with Mdk 9.1
& got some very helpful advice, basically to use AMD.
i have built a machine which works ok upto a point,
but won't function acc to full specs, & wonder if anyone has advice.
i have a Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra Black mobo, an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton CPU,
Samsung 512 MB memory (DDR400) & ASUS AGP 8x graphics card.
it booted 1st time & i did a grannie install of 9.1 ('yes' to everything),
which went thro' very cleanly, tho' you get a rather ugly KDE desktop;
as this is only testing, i haven't gone any further with Linux.
i have no problem running the mobo at FSB 133 , but at FSB 166
-- which the mobo is advertised to support -- it's not at all reliable.
first, it doesn't recognise the CPU in its default setting,
but thinks it's a 1900+ running at 1467 MHz ; more seriously,
if i try manually setting the FSB to 166 with appropriate other settings,
it boots ok 1 - 3 times, then fails to talk to the AGP card:
there's a long-short-short beep signalling this & then Linux boots invisibly,
as i can see & hear from the HDD activity & fr using Ctl-Alt-Del to reset.
i've got the latest BIOS revision, thanks to Gary Meyer,
who has been very helpful with advice, & have tried eg increasing voltages.
someone else reported the same problem on a Soyo newsgroup
& i have sent a note to Soyo via its tech support WWW site.
anyone have any similar experiences or useful thoughts?
