a couple of possibilities:

1. telnet or ssh into the box and as root, do a "ps ax |grep dm",
notice the command options listed, kill the display manager (gdm,
kdm, mdkkdm, whatever) and restart it as it was listed in the ps
output.

2. from your remote login try running the displaymanager command
with the --restart option (gdm --restart, kdm --restart, etc.),
or possibliy with a single dash.  see if there is a manpage for
the dm that will list the options, or a --help option.  the
problem with this - if you're logged into an X session you'll
probably get blown away when the dm restarts and if it doesn't
work, you're SOL.

there are probably many other ways that someone else can
enlighten us all on *s*
