You were right, Todd, it's a DMA problem. Booting with ide=nodma solve it. What puzzles me is that 1) the WD drive works fine with my MSI motherboard (Nforce2 chipset) and 2) The Fujitsi and the old IBM disk also have the problem with the bi-proc. mobo. And you were right too concerning the performance without DMA. I copied the Mandrake DVD to the disk to see if the system remained stable. Stable it was, but it was almost unusable (100% CPU used for copying) and it took an awful long time... I'm going to order a Maxtor drive (I need one more disk anyway) and see what happens.
