It finally dawned on me that my attempts to sort out fstab through a
temporary mount in 9.0 had failed because the mount had not completed
correctly. I mounted again, and could then find the file, so I
edited /etc/fstab back to what it was before, and here I am back
again.

Relying on webmail is awful - it crashed leaving me logged in, as it
has done many times before, so it will be a while before the lock is
released and I find out if anyone had any more thoughts on this.

Meanwhile, could someone give me some ideas on the problems I had with
loss of root password (which is ok now, so it must have been lost
access to it, not corruption), what I need to do in the way of access
rights to /holding which will be the new /usr, and why I was
constantly getting messages denying access to /bin (related, I
suppose, to the root login problem?).

I hate to give up, so what do I do now?

Anne
