Yeah, I can do that as well, but all the others that use the comp literally choke when they see a console login screen. and getting them to use command line stuff to start "anything" is like pulling teeth. Myself and my grand daughter Alex are the only real geeks in the house. As for what display manager I'm using, its kdekdm. I had this problem for a short time once before. I can't recall exactly if it was a time I upgraded KDE, or if it happened when I upgraded to 9.1 from 9.0.
