well i found out what i was doing wrong, turned out i had made a typo in my naming of the printer in linux! so no matter how carefully i scrutinised my entries in winxp it was never going to work! using samba and browsing for the printer in winxp i didn't notice the error, turns out to be the proverbial piece.... once that's sorted :)
