Okay, dumb user error. I had once set in preferences that I wanted it to use 
libmp3lame.so for decoding mp3. I guess it didn't take for what ever reason. 
So the next time I played, it basically locked up. 

Now a basic question that maybe I'm doing something wrong. When you open a 
song, there is a blinking cursor across the graph. I would expect this to 
progress across as it plays. It does not. There IS a little triangle that 
starts to move, but stops after about 1/4". Shouldn't there be some sort of 
cursor line move across to indicate where I am in the file as it plays. No 
pause either. ?? This must not have been the little editor I used back in the 
8x days.
