Hi Folks,

anyone here having some experience on the hardware and software to use for
a big mail-server ? I am talking of about 10000 users using pop3 protocol
with huge inboxes, up to 150MBytes. Also - we are having approx 500
pop3-queries per minute ... and the machine sometimes is having a load of
up to 150... due to reading of very big inboxes. We are testing gpopper
right now for speed issues - but if anyone has a hint on what to use for
that (Needs to be reliable and fast) - welcome.

The machine that is running on is also used for other things - but we want
to move mails (SMTP/POP3/Imap) on a dedicated machine. Eventualy also DNS.

Right now: Dual Xeon with 4GBytes of Ram, and stripped mail-spool
directory for speed, backed up by a Raid 5 system (all of course SCSI).

So - to my questions:
1. What hardware would be suitable ? to sustain the load, and have peace
   for the next year.
2. What pop3-software would be best to use.
Would the Cyrus-Imap ne suitable for such a load of users ?
3. What File-System should be used for the spool directory ?
   Reiser/Ext3/Xfs (Needs to be journaled).

Thx for any comments & Hints...

        Joerg
